According to a recent article in the New York Times, 95 percent of Americans say they give to charity. The average donation is usually monetary, but people like to donate time and goods as well. Usually when people think of donating goods, they think of a bag of clothes, toys or books. However, there are several big ticket items that are literally big themselves that people can give. Ever consider donating a boat? It’s more common than you think. Read on to discover other big items commonly given to charity and how you can donate, too.
- Big Screen Televisions – Televisions are getting flatter and lighter, so it’s no wonder older big screen TVs are a popular item to donate. They are also a popular item for a charity to receive. TVs can be used in communal areas of shelters or other organizations. Alternatively, a non-profit organization can sell the TV and use the proceeds.
- Cars – Even if your car doesn’t run, there are plenty of charitable organizations willing to take your jalopy. You can deduct the donation from your taxes, just be sure to itemize. In addition to cars, many organizations also take boats and RVs.
- Appliances – Some charities such as the Salvation Army will take your old appliances if they are in good working order. Some programs such as Edison International recycle old – yet working – appliances in return for either a rebate or an option to donate to the Energy Assistance Fund. Either way, your old appliances find a new home and everyone benefits.
- Property – According to the Chronicle of Philanthropy, two to three percent of donations include property. However, if you do decide to give a plot of land to a particular group, it’s a good idea to check with a financial advisor first to make sure the donation is a win-win proposition.
